I’m the shop supervisor and I manage the production at the shop. We make custom stairs and interior door units to suit our customers needs. A fair amount of custom work, a lot of stuff that you can’t pick up at the home centers. For example, odd-size jambs to meet walls that are thicker than normal. We make sure that our stairs meet code as well as meet the elevation that you need rather than the standard 8 1/4 inch rise with no fluctuation unless you’ve got real small step at the bottom or potentially a real large one at the top. So we want to make it right and do it right the first time.
We have an outside sales force that handles the majority of the conversations with the actual builder or trimmer who’s doing the work to make sure that we are meeting the needs that they request. We adapt to the customer because some builders do it one way and some do it another way. A lot of times we do get the builder or trimmer that comes into the showroom and they’ve got special circumstances that we need to go over. And we will work through those details to suit their needs.
Repeat business is a key factor here for us at Mathews and Fields. Whether the customer is coming into the store, or whether they contact the services our outside sales force provides, we strive to build a relationship based on repeat business. And I’ve learned, we’ve learned, what your needs and expectations are, and you learn what we can provide and how long it takes us to do it. And in the whole scheme of things, that’s what builds a quality home for the customer.
