How wide is that board?

The stated size of a board is called its nominal size and not the actual size. For example: a nominal size might be 2″ x 4″ but the actual size is 1-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ The piece started out approximately 2″ x 4″ but after drying and planing it ends up smaller.
